Servicing hoists is not optional, it is mandatory.
Virtually every governing body that encompasses hoists expresses specific guidelines. Below is a general recap of the classification definitions and the standards to research for hoist inspections.
Classifications:
Both ANSI and the manufacturer recommend the frequency of inspection (frequent and periodic inspections) based on the use of the hoist. Below are the frequency guidelines:
ANSI Guidelines:
- Severe Service – Hoist operates in excess of 200 days per year
- Normal Service – Hoist operates 200 or fewer days a year, but more than 25
- Stand By Service – Hoist operates 25 or fewer days per year, but at least once per year
- Rental Service – Hoist is operational on an irregular schedule by rental use
- Out of Service – Hoist does not operate for a period of a year or longer
Manufacturer Guidelines:
- Severe Service – Normal or heavy service with abnormal operating conditions
- Heavy Service – Involves operating the hoist within the rated load limit which exceeds normal service
- Normal Service – Involves operation with randomly distributed loads within the rated load limit, or uniform loads less than 65% of the rated load for not more than 25% of the time
Periodic Inspection Duration Periods:
- Severe Service – Every 3 months
- Normal Service – Yearly
- Stand By Service – Yearly
- Rental Service – Yearly
- Out of Service – Prior to Reintroduction in Service
